Ronald Nored made a free throw with 3:37 left in the second half to give the Bulldogs a 66-56 lead. A fastbreak layup and free throw by Cleveland State's Norris Cole cut the margin to seven with 3:03 left, but the Vikings (21-4, 10-3) would come no closer.
Butler scored seven straight points and held Cleveland State scoreless until 36 seconds to play. Mack scored four points during the Bulldogs' spurt.
Maryland point guard Melo Trimble, considered a lock to leave the program before struggling in the second half last season, has withdrawn from the NBA draft and will return for his junior season.
