• Marquette made its first Sweet 16 since its Final Four run in 2003.
• This is the sixth straight year that Marquette has made the NCAA tournament, but they hadn't made the Sweet 16 in any of the previous five.
• Syracuse was trying to advance to the Sweet 16 for the third straight season, but they've still never done that in school history. They're 0-4 in such opportunities.
• Marquette advances to play North Carolina. The teams' last tournament meeting came in the 1977 championship game, when Marquette won the national title.
