MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Shamir Davis scored a career-high 27 points, hitting 11 of 14 field goals, to spark Northwestern State to a 67-60 win over Alabama State on Thursday night.

The Demons (2-1) also got 13 points from Gary Roberson and 11 from Gary Stewart, while William Mosley had 15 rebounds, eight points and four blocked shots.

Northwestern State, which led the nation in team blocked shots (7.0 per game) last year, had 11 rejections and 12 steals.

The Hornets (0-3) led 34-33 at halftime, but the Demons used a full-court press to take control in the second half and led by as many as 12 in the final minute.

Alabama State, with four starters back from last year's Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament championship team, was led by Tramaine Butler with 18 points and Ivory White with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

The Hornets won the battle of the boards 45-43.
