PITTSBURGH -- Syracuse was missing its starting center. UNC Asheville thought the Orange got help from three men in striped shirts.
With Syracuse facing the kind of NCAA tournament history no team wants to make, the top-seeded Orange rallied for a 72-65 victory Thursday in the second round of the East Regional. Two calls by the officials had the sellout crowd of 18,927 at Consol Energy Center -- except for those wearing orange -- booing throughout the final minute but it didn't matter.O'Neil: Asheville's Pain is Real
UNC Asheville came close to an historic upset but will soon be forgotten as just another 16-seed. If only it were so easy for the Bulldogs to forget, writes Dana O'Neil. Blog
Syracuse continued a season-long trend, again finding a way to win a close game, writes Dick Vitale. Story

Syracuse in Trouble?
Top-seeded Syracuse beat No. 16 seed UNC Asheville by just 7 points on Thursday. That doesn't bode well for the Orange's prospects in the tournament.
Of the 11 previous No. 1 seeds to beat a 16-seed by single digits in the round of 64, four lost their next game -- 1996 Purdue, 1990 Oklahoma, 1986 St. John's and 1985 Michigan.
Of the seven that didn't lose their next game, only three -- 1986 Duke, 1989 Illinois and 1997 North Carolina -- reached the Final Four.

Research Notes
Syracuse has set NCAA Tournament precedent before - they were the first 2 seed to lose to a 15...back in 1991 when they lost to Richmond. |
