ORANGEBURG, S.C. -- Darryl Palmer scored 21 points and Khalif Toombs added 17 to lead South Carolina State to an 81-62 victory against Claflin in the Garden City Classic on Saturday night in the season opener for both teams.
Palmer shot 3 for 4 on 3-pointers and 7 of 11 overall.
Claflin took a 54-50 lead with a 10-0 run in the second half, but South Carolina State outscored Claflin 31-8 in the dash to the finish line for the easy victory.
Louie Adams chipped in with 14 points, and Matthew Hezekiah added 13 points and 12 rebounds for the Bulldog.
South Carolina State made 30 of 59 shots from the field, including 6 of 12 from 3-point range, and the Bulldogs outrebounded Claflin 45-32.
Marcellus Dunn led Claflin with 20 points, and Davis Glover scored 10.
Ted Kapita was the top-rated recruit from West Virginia in the class of 2015 and recently played at DME Academy in Florida.
With the Suns drafting Tyler Ulis, they now have five guards on their roster who attended Kentucky.
