LONG BEACH, Calif. -- James Ennis scored 19 points and Long Beach State won its season opener on Saturday, defeating North Alabama 75-65.
Ennis, the lone returning starter from last year's Big West Conference champions, was 6 of 10 from the field and added six rebounds. Reserves Kris Gulley and Deng Deng scored 11 points apiece, with Gulley and Dan Jennings grabbing a team-high seven rebounds for the 49ers.
It was the first meeting between the schools.
Reggie Witherspoon, who spent more than 13 seasons coaching at Buffalo, is returning to the city to coach Canisius College.
North Carolina Hall of Fame men's basketball coach Roy Williams is recovering from knee-replacement surgery.
Sparkling facilities are one thing, but Tim Miles needs to regain the momentum of Nebraska's 2014 run to the NCAAs if it is to play with the big boys.
