BUIES CREEK, N.C. -- DeQuan Hicks scored 19 points and Northwestern State hung on after losing a big second-half lead to defeat Campbell 71-67 in a nonconference game Monday night.
The Demons (2-0) led by 21 points, 50-29, with 15:05 remaining before the Camels (1-1) began to chip away.
Layups by Marvin Frazier and Shamir Davis and two free throws by O.J. Evans built the Demons' edge to 69-58 with 1:11 left, but Northwestern State missed 5 of 7 free throws down the stretch, allowing Campbell to cut into the lead.
Hicks also grabbed 10 rebounds for Northwestern State.
White and Darian Hooker scored 15 points apiece for Campbell, and Freeman scored 13.
Maryland point guard Melo Trimble, considered a lock to leave the program before struggling in the second half last season, has withdrawn from the NBA draft and will return for his junior season.
Louisville's Chinanu Onuaku, who recently underwent a medical procedure to correct a heart rhythm issue detected during the combine, will keep his name in the NBA draft pool.
Andrew White III will return to the Nebraska men's basketball team next season after removing his name from the NBA draft.
