BALTIMORE -- Erik Etherly led four players in double figures with 22 points as Loyola (MD) defeated Maryland-Baltimore County 86-70 Wednesday night in a nonconference meeting.
UMBC (1-2) led 15-14 early in the first half before Hubbard knocked down a 3-pointer and converted a three-point play on back-to-back possessions to put Loyola up 20-15.
The Retrievers cut the deficit to one, 20-19, but Loyola closed the half on a 25-11 run to take a 15-point advantage, 45-30, into halftime.
UMBC never got any closer than 11 in the second half.
Loyola (2-1) shot 50 percent (28 of 56) from the field -including 7 of 14 from deep -- and dominated the boards 44-29.
Chase Plummer led UMBC with 28 points but shot just 9 of 17 from the field.
Former Kentucky guard Ed Davender, the only Wildcat with at least 1,500 points and 400 assists, has died. He was 49.
Guard Naz Mitrou-Long, whose 2015-16 season ended in December due to hip problems, has been granted a hardship waiver for the coming season, Iowa State said.
As the Sooners look to life without superstar Buddy Hield and his sidekicks, it's clear their unseasoned players will need to grow up fast.
