MIAMI -- Antonio Bostic scored 23 points and Stephen F. Austin opened up a big first-half lead in a 69-60 victory over Florida International Saturday in nonconference play.
The Lumberjacks (2-0) rolled to a 40-24 halftime lead behind Bostic and forwards Jacob Parker and Taylor Smith, then coasted home. Bostic hit three of Stephen F. Austin's 10 3-pointers while Parker, who scored 13 points, made his only 3-point attempt.
Smith, with 12 points, just missed a double-double with nine rebounds, and blocked five FIU shots. As a team, the Lumberjacks shot 59.9 percent from the floor (28 for 47).
Florida International, meanwhile, got off to an awful start. The Golden Panthers (0-2) had only two players finish in double figures: Tymell Murphy with 17 points and Malik Smith with 16. FIU shot just 35.7 percent from the field (20 of 56) and was 4 of 13 from beyond the arc.
Colorado State graduate transfer John Gillon has chosen Syracuse, giving the Orange a potential starter at point guard entering the 2016-17 season.
DeSean Murray, who averaged 20.2 points as a sophomore at Presbyterian, will transfer to Auburn to play for coach Bruce Pearl.
Former Kentucky guard Ed Davender, the only Wildcat with at least 1,500 points and 400 assists, has died. He was 49.
