HOUSTON -- Travis Bader scored 23 points, including a 3-pointer in the final minute to put Oakland ahead, and the Golden Grizzlies defeated Texas Southern 71-69 Tuesday night.
Bader, who was 7 for 12 from 3-point range, connected from behind the arc with 42 seconds left to give Oakland a 70-69 lead. Ryan Bass made a free throw for the Golden Grizzlies (2-3) and Texas Southern couldn't score at the end.
Corey Petros scored 18 points for Oakland. Raymond Penn led the Tigers (1-4) with 22 points, making 6 of 10 from 3-point range, while Fred Sturdivant had 16 points and 10 rebounds for TSU. The Tigers hurt themselves at the free-throw line, making just 5 of 13.
Former Kentucky guard Ed Davender, the only Wildcat with at least 1,500 points and 400 assists, has died. He was 49.
Guard Naz Mitrou-Long, whose 2015-16 season ended in December due to hip problems, has been granted a hardship waiver for the coming season, Iowa State said.
As the Sooners look to life without superstar Buddy Hield and his sidekicks, it's clear their unseasoned players will need to grow up fast.
