STATESBORO, Ga. -- Lucas Troutman netted 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting as Elon topped Georgia Southern 55-50 Wednesday in each teams' Southern Conference opener.
Elon (5-2, 1-0) has now won five of its past six games.
Troutman also pulled down five rebounds and had four steals. Jack Isenbarger backed him with 12 points and four assists.
The Phoenix led 32-26 at halftime then used a 12-0 run that spanned nearly 9 minutes in the second half to take a 49-34 lead with 5:58 left.
The Eagles responded with a 16-4 run and cut the lead to 53-50 with 40 seconds left on a free throw by Ferguson, but got no closer. Isenbarger iced the win with two free throws with 7 seconds left.
There's nothing to suggest the Jayhawks won't end up atop the Big 12 for a 13th season in a row. But what about a return to the Final Four?
Colorado State graduate transfer John Gillon has chosen Syracuse, giving the Orange a potential starter at point guard entering the 2016-17 season.
