POCATELLO, Idaho -- Melvin Morgan grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds on his way to a double-double Thursday night, while Chris Hansen and Tomas Sanchez led Idaho State in scoring as the Bengals got their first win of the season, downing Montana Western, 70-52.
Hansen put up 20 points on 5 of 9 shooting, including 4 of 5 from beyond the arc. Sanchez scored 17 points. He also did some damage from the stripe, where he went 8 for 8.
Morgan added 13 points and had three steals for the Bengals (1-5).
Montana Western, a NAIA school, got off to a rough start. The Bulldogs scored just six points during the first 9 minutes and were down 36-17 at halftime.
During the second half, the Bulldogs pulled to within 13 with 9 minutes to go. But the Bengals closed the game strong.
Former Kentucky guard Ed Davender, the only Wildcat with at least 1,500 points and 400 assists, has died. He was 49.
Guard Naz Mitrou-Long, whose 2015-16 season ended in December due to hip problems, has been granted a hardship waiver for the coming season, Iowa State said.
As the Sooners look to life without superstar Buddy Hield and his sidekicks, it's clear their unseasoned players will need to grow up fast.
