The Hornets led 20-8 midway through the first half but the Spartans only trailed 28-22 at the break. After Kinney's 3-pointer put San Jose State ahead, the Spartans sealed it at the free-throw line with D.J. Brown making 7 of 8 tries in the last 1:06.
Both teams shot 31 percent from the field.
