BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. -- Tashan Newsome scored a game-high 27 points Saturday night to lead Gardner-Webb to a 61-41 win over Tennessee Tech in a nonconference game.
Newsome was nearly a one-man show for the Runnin' Bulldogs (6-5) of the Big South. His 27 points came on 8-of-12 shooting overall, including 3 of 6 on 3-point attempts. Newsome also was 8 for 10 at the free throw line. He grabbed a team-high eight rebounds, too.
Gardner-Webb led 24-9 midway through the first half, which included those three early treys by Newsome and then a 3-point jumper by Max Landis to lead 32-23 at the break. Tennessee Tech (5-4) never really threatened. The Golden Eagles shot just 29.2 percent from the field, making only 14 of 48 shots.
Matt Marseille was the only Tennessee Tech player to finish in double figures, coming off the bench to score 10 points.
