ORONO, Maine -- Justin Edwards and Alasdair Fraser scored 17 points apiece and all five Maine starters hit double figures to lead the Black Bears past Maryland-Baltimore County 81-66 Saturday in an American East Conference showdown.
Jon Mesghna (16 points) went 5 of 5 from the field, including 3 of 3 from deep, while Xavier Pollard and Mike Allison posted 10 points apiece. Allison pulled down 10 boards for the Black Bears (7-8, 2-0), who had a 38-25 rebounding advantage and have won four straight since snapping a three-game skid.
Maine opened the game on a 14-6 run but UMBC answered with a 19-5 run of its own to take a 25-19 lead with 7:14 left in the first half. However, Mesghna hit a 3, sparking an 18-5 spurt for Maine, which led 37-29 at intermission.
Chase Plummer's 14 led UMBC (2-13, 0-2), which trailed by at least five the entire second half.
Maryland point guard Melo Trimble, considered a lock to leave the program before struggling in the second half last season, has withdrawn from the NBA draft and will return for his junior season.
Louisville's Chinanu Onuaku, who recently underwent a medical procedure to correct a heart rhythm issue detected during the combine, will keep his name in the NBA draft pool.
Andrew White III will return to the Nebraska men's basketball team next season after removing his name from the NBA draft.
