The Panthers (6-7, 1-0) got double-figure scoring from Devante Williams (11 points) and Dejuan McGaughy and John Brown (10 each). But it was Derrell Edwards who helped High Point make its decisive second-half run.
With Winthrop (6-7, 0-1) leading 44-42, Edwards hit three consecutive 3-pointers -- his only points of the game -- in a 13-0 run. After scoring just 26 points in the first half, the Panthers outscored Winthrop 48-32 after the break.
High Point made 8 of 19 3-point attempts. Winthrop was just 3 of 14 beyond the arc.
The Panthers also had a 46-31 rebounding advantage, and their bench outscored Winthrop's 32-14.
