STATESBORO, Ga. -- Matt Van Scyoc hit five 3-pointers en route to 21 points as The Citadel got off the Southern Conference schneid with a 70-55 defeat of Georgia Southern Saturday night.
The Citadel shot 60 percent (24 of 40) from the field and hit 9 of 17 3-point attempts. The Bulldogs held Georgia Southern (8-11, 2-4) to 35.7 percent (20 of 56) shooting.
C.J. Reed paced the Eagles with 13 points.
The Citadel trailed 18-12 with 5:49 left until halftime, but P.J. Horgan's free throws sparked an 18-4 Bulldog run for a 31-22 halftime lead.
Scyoc opened the second half with a 3-pointer, and The Citadel built the lead to 59-41 on Roselle's layup with 7:25 left.
Shooting guard Jaylen Nowell, ranked No. 45 in the ESPN 100, chose the Washington Huskies on Wednesday over California. As a junior he led Garfield Heights to a state championship and was named MVP of the tournament.
Donnie Tyndall has filed an appeal to reverse the 10-year show cause penalty he received from the NCAA in April for violations that occurred while he was coaching Southern Mississippi.
Top-50 prospect Jaylen Nowell committed to Washington on Wednesday. Nowell, a shooting guard, is No. 45 on the ESPN 100.
