FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Shane Gibson scored 33 points, Luis Montes had 25 and Phil Gaetano handed out a career-high 13 assists to lead Sacred Heart to an 82-68 victory over Monmouth in Northeast Conference play on Saturday night.
Monmouth led 56-46 on two foul shots by Stephen Spinella with 12:48 to go, but a 16-4 run put Sacred Heart ahead 62-60. Monmouth reclaimed the lead 68-67 on Marcus Ware's layup with 4:51 remaining, but the Pioneers scored the last 15 points of the game.
Gibson was 7 of 17 from the field and 15 of 17 from the line in his season-high 33 points for the Pioneers (8-11, 6-2), who have won three consecutive games. Montes made 9 of 13 from the field. The Pioneers shot 50 percent from the field (26 of 52).
Dion Nesmith scored 16 and Spinella had 11 for the Hawks (8-13, 3-5).
SMU has signed a second player from Australia, 6-foot-11 forward Harry Froling, to a national letter of intent. The Mustangs previously signed guard Tom Wilson from Australia.
