Jauwan Scaife led the Cardinals (7-11, 2-5) with 23 points. Majok Majok, the reigning MAC West player of the week, had 16 points and 15 rebounds, improving upon his conference-leading average of 10.1 rebounds per game.
A back-and-forth first half saw Ball State lead 37-35 on Majok's layup at the halftime buzzer, and another Majok basket, with 11:42 to play, tied the game at 51. Toledo began to pull away after that, leading by as many as 15 before Scaife's layup with 12 seconds left cut the Rockets' lead to 81-78. But Ball State could get no closer.
