HAMMOND, La. -- James Hulbin came off the bench for 16 points and Shamir Davis tallied 15, including nine on free throws, as Northwestern State beat Southeastern Louisiana 79-76 Thursday night for its seventh straight win.
Northwestern State (17-6, 11-2 Southland Conference) opened the game on a 13-0 run and led 16-3 after Brison White answered an Antionnio Benton tip-in with a 3-pointer.
The Demons opened the second half on an 8-2 run, but Southeast Louisiana rallied to tie it 74-all on two Brandon Fortenberry free throws with 45 seconds left. The Lions would get no closer, though, as Hulbin broke the tie with a 3-pointer and Jalan West answered a Fortenberry layup with two free throws to seal it.
Fortenberry had 20 points for Southeastern Louisiana (9-13, 7-5), which outshot Northwestern State 49.1 percent (26 of 53) to 44.8 percent (26 of 58) but lost 41-28 on the boards.
Guard Naz Mitrou-Long, whose 2015-16 season ended in December due to hip problems, has been granted a hardship waiver for the coming season, Iowa State said.
