Tied at 61-61, Kierre Greenwood's layup put Coastal Carolina (12-12, 7-6) on top 63-61 with just 2:52 left to play. Newsome answered with two free throws to tie the game at 63 with 2:18 remaining.
Gardner-Webb extended its lead to 67-63 on a layup by Tyler Strange and a dunk by Newsome, while Coastal Carolina had one turnover and missed all its shots in the final 2 minutes.
Harper went 13 of 16 from the foul line, as the Runnin' Bulldogs made 24 free throws to 10 for the Chanticleers.
