BEAUMONT, Texas -- Jeremie Mitchell scored 17 points and hit two key free throws to seal the deal for McNeese State in a 69-62 victory over Lamar on Saturday night.
Mitchell's two free throws with 8 seconds to go capped a 9-0 run by McNeese State (10-13, 4-9 Southland) in the final 2 minutes. Lamar's Hondo Webb tied it at 60 with a tip-in at the 2:26 mark but the Cowboys responded with nine straight points.
McNeese State, which saw its bench get outscored 54-15 by the Cardinals, shot just 37.5 percent from the field but were 8 of 17 from 3-point range.
Rhon Mitchell had 18 points and seven rebounds to lead Lamar (3-22, 1-12). The 22 losses for the Cardinals are the most for a single season in the program's history.
Ted Kapita was the top-rated recruit from West Virginia in the class of 2015 and recently played at DME Academy in Florida.
With the Suns drafting Tyler Ulis, they now have five guards on their roster who attended Kentucky.
