NEW YORK -- Jamal Olasewere and C.J. Garner combined to score 63 points Saturday to help Long Island Brooklyn defeat Quinnipiac 96-90 and lock up at least one home game in the upcoming Northeast Conference tournament.
Olasewere tallied a career-high 33 points and 10 rebounds, while former high school teammate Garner added a personal-best 30 points.
Brandon Thompson, who had 11 points, capped a 13-2 run with a three-point play to help the Blackbirds (17-13, 12-6) turn a 43-34 halftime deficit into a 47-45 advantage.
From there, Quinnipiac (15-15, 11-7) twice cut the deficit to one, but each time Garner answered with a jumper to extend LIU Brooklyn's lead.
LIU Brooklyn outshot Quinnipiac 55 percent (32 of 58) to 49 percent (33 of 67), including a sizzling 67 percent (19 of 28) in the second half.
Forward Kennedy Meeks, who has averaged 9.4 points and 6.5 rebounds at North Carolina, has pulled out of the NBA draft and will return to the Tar Heels.
Cal big man Ivan Rabb could have been selected in the top 10 of the NBA draft. Instead, he's returning to Berkeley to make himself, and the Golden Bears, stronger.
