Stuart Siegel Center, Richmond, VA
RICHMOND, Va. -- "Be VCU."
It was the last thing coach Shaka Smart wrote on the locker room board before leading his team out to play No. 20 Butler on Saturday. The Rams heeded his advice with their most dominating 40-minute performance of the season."Nobody's coming in here today and winning," Butler coach Brad Stevens said after the Rams, spurred on by a fast start and a deafening home crowd, won 84-52. "We didn't play well enough to even make it close, but that's a whole other story."O'Neil: VCU Downs Butler with 'Havoc' D
If Saturday is the only Atlantic 10 meeting between Butler and VCU, the Rams made sure the Bulldogs got a good taste of the 'Havoc' defense in case they bolt for the Big East, writes Dana O'Neil. Story

Research Notes
Prior to Saturday's 32-point loss at VCU, Butler had not lost a conference game by 30 or more points since the 1985-86 season.
In their final regular season Midwestern Collegiate Conference game of the '85-86 season (Feb. 24, 1986), the Bulldogs suffered a 41-point road loss at Oral Roberts, 104-63.
The Midwestern Collegiate Conference is now the Horizon League today. In addition, Oral Roberts' school nickname at the time was the Titans (ORU is now known as the Golden Eagles). |
