NORFOLK, Va. -- Freshman Rashid Gaston had a career-high 20 points and his second straight double-double as Norfolk State remained perfect in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play, sweeping Florida A&M 69-58.
Gaston added 10 rebounds for his third double-double as the Spartans (20-10, 15-0) clinched a share of the MEAC title and the top seed in the conference tournament -- both program firsts.
Norfolk State has won 14 straight, and host North Carolina A&T Thursday with a chance to complete the first perfect MEAC season since Coppin State did it consecutively in 1992-93 and 1993-94.
The Spartans also moved to 10-0 at home this year and will be seeking their first undefeated home season since 1988-89.
Norfolk State shot 49.1 percent (28 of 57) to Florida A&M's 31.4 percent (22 of 70).
Maryland point guard Melo Trimble, considered a lock to leave the program before struggling in the second half last season, has withdrawn from the NBA draft and will return for his junior season.
Louisville's Chinanu Onuaku, who recently underwent a medical procedure to correct a heart rhythm issue detected during the combine, will keep his name in the NBA draft pool.
Andrew White III will return to the Nebraska men's basketball team next season after removing his name from the NBA draft.
