FARGO, N.D. -- Aaron Brown had 18 points to lead Southern Miss to a 70-69 victory over North Dakota State on Monday night.
Neil Watson hit a 3-pointer with 1:29 to give Southern Miss (3-0) a 70-66 lead and all the points it would need to hang on for the win.
The score was on tied five different occasions in the second half -- including 65-65 with 3:44 to go -- but Southern Miss never allowed North Dakota State take the lead.
The Bison (1-2) had one final attempt down 70-69 with 1.8 seconds to play, but Watson stole the ball from TrayVonn Wright following the inbounds pass and time expired.
Wright led all scorers with 21 points and also recorded a game-high 12 rebounds for the Golden Eagles. Mike Felt added 15 points on 4-of-9 shooting from 3-point range.
Maryland point guard Melo Trimble, considered a lock to leave the program before struggling in the second half last season, has withdrawn from the NBA draft and will return for his junior season.
Louisville's Chinanu Onuaku, who recently underwent a medical procedure to correct a heart rhythm issue detected during the combine, will keep his name in the NBA draft pool.
Andrew White III will return to the Nebraska men's basketball team next season after removing his name from the NBA draft.
