FAIRFAX, Va. -- Bryon Allen scored 20 points Friday night to lead George Mason to a 63-60 win over American University.
Sherrod Wright, who led the Patriots in scoring last season, made a layup with 2:54 left to give them a 58-57 lead.
American missed 3-pointers on its next two possessions and Allen answered with a layup off a fast break to put the Patriots (1-0) up by three. American (0-1) never got closer.
Allen went 5 for 10 from the floor and made 9 of 10 free throws. Wright finished with 13 points.
This was the 41st game in the rivalry but the first time the teams have met since 2005-2006.
