MOBILE, Ala. -- Mychal Ammons scored 13 points and grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds as South Alabama rolled to a 74-58 win over Detroit on Friday night in the season opener for both schools.
South Alabama coach Matthew Graves won his first game as coach of the Jaguars and South Alabama won its season opener for the 22nd consecutive year.
Antoine Allen scored a team-high 17 points for South Alabama. The Jaguars began to pull away midway through the first half, putting together a 14-3 run to open a 30-17 lead, and led 45-31 at halftime. South Alabama maintained a double-digit lead throughout the second half, leading by as many as 22.
The Titans struggled offensively, shooting just 28.9 percent from the field.
Juwan Howard Jr., the son of former NBA player and current Miami Heat assistant coach Juwan Howard, led all scorers with 18 points and had 11 rebounds for Detroit.
