Associated Press

LAFAYETTE, La. -- A rain of 3-pointers by Kasey Shepherd and Kevin Brown pulled Louisiana-Lafayette out of an early deficit as the Rajin' Cajuns stormed past Texas-Arlington 90-70 Saturday.

The visiting Mavericks went from leading 8-7 to trailing 21-8 in the 4-minute turnaround.

The Rajin' Cajuns (10-5, 1-1 Sun Belt) sank 9 of 22 3-point baskets and also scored 31 points from the free-throw line, scoring in bunches to build leads of as many as 18 points by halftime and by 27 in the second half.

Shawn Long led Louisiana-Lafayette with 22 points and seven blocks, Shepherd scored 17 on 3-for-4 3-point shooting, Elfrid Payton and Xavian Rimmer added 12 apiece.

Lonnie McClanahan led Texas-Arlington (6-10, 1-3) with 27 points, Brandon Edwards 10. The Mavericks were held to 39 percent shooting (24-61) and hit just 5 of 20 3-point tries.

Bench strength was a factor as Louisiana-Lafayette reserves outscored their Mavericks counterparts 49-15.

Research Notes

Shawn Long of Louisiana-Lafayette had 22 points, 9 rebounds and 7 blocks off the bench in Saturday's 90-70 win over Texas-Arlington. The last time a player came off the bench to reach those thresholds against a Dvision I opponent was on Feb. 7, 2009, when IPFW's Deilvez Yearby had 23, 8 and 7 against Oral Roberts.
