NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Justin Sears' 20 points and clutch free throws led Yale to a 74-67 win over Brown on Saturday.
Armani Cotton added 19 points for the Bulldogs, who outscored Brown 21-10 in turnover points.
Yale (7-8, 1-0 Ivy League) led Brown 33-31 in a tight first half that featured several lead changes.
The second half played out in much the same fashion until the Bulldogs broke free from Brown (8-7, 0-1) seven minutes in and led 55-46 on a Nick Victor layup.
Yale maintained that spread over the next six minutes before Brown closed the gap to just one point with 2:21 to play when Cedrick Kuakumensah made a layup and free throw.
Sears was good on 6-of-6 free throw attempts in the final 1:12 while Brown's long ball efforts failed and the Bulldogs picked up their first conference win.
Sean McGonagill led Brown scorers with 17 points.
Maryland point guard Melo Trimble, considered a lock to leave the program before struggling in the second half last season, has withdrawn from the NBA draft and will return for his junior season.
Louisville's Chinanu Onuaku, who recently underwent a medical procedure to correct a heart rhythm issue detected during the combine, will keep his name in the NBA draft pool.
Andrew White III will return to the Nebraska men's basketball team next season after removing his name from the NBA draft.
