KINGSTON, R.I. -- E.C. Matthews scored 18 points as Rhode Island pulled away from North Carolina A&T in the second half, winning 72-59.
North Carolina A&T (1-2) played head-to -head with Rhode Island (2-1) in the first half which featured nine lead changes and seven ties. NC A&T led the Rams at the half 33-32, but Rhode Island turned it around in the second pulling off a 16-0 run and led 53-38 with 10 minutes left. Rhode Island cruised to the buzzer.
Xavier Munford scored 13 Rhode Island points and Jarelle Reischel scored 12. The Rams shot 50 percent in the second half, but only 17 percent from the 3-point line for the game. Rhode Island outscored NC A&M 19-6 in second chance points coming-off offensive rebounds.
Maryland point guard Melo Trimble, considered a lock to leave the program before struggling in the second half last season, has withdrawn from the NBA draft and will return for his junior season.
Louisville's Chinanu Onuaku, who recently underwent a medical procedure to correct a heart rhythm issue detected during the combine, will keep his name in the NBA draft pool.
Andrew White III will return to the Nebraska men's basketball team next season after removing his name from the NBA draft.
