NORFOLK, Va. -- Malcolm Hawkins scored 22 points to lead Norfolk State over Coppin State 83-71 on Monday.
The Spartans (11-8, 5-1 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) got 17 points from Pendarvis Williams, Rashid Gaston added 12 and Brandon Goode had 10 as the team shot 50 percent from the floor. They out-rebounded the Eagles 42-31.
The Eagles led by one, 31-30, after a Smith layup with 4:54 left in the first half, but Norfolk closed on a 15-5 run -- highlighted by a Williams 3-pointer -- to lead 45-36 at the intermission.
Norfolk scored the first 10 points of the second half to extend the lead to 19 and was never challenged down the stretch.
Ted Kapita was the top-rated recruit from West Virginia in the class of 2015 and recently played at DME Academy in Florida.
With the Suns drafting Tyler Ulis, they now have five guards on their roster who attended Kentucky.
