ORANGEBURG, S.C. -- Angel Matias scored 22 points and pulled down nine rebounds as Georgia Southern handily defeated South Carolina State 79-61 on Saturday.
Matias was 8 of 12 from the floor to pace the Eagles (5-5). Tre Bussey and Curtis Diamond both added 14 points while Jelani Hewitt chipped in with 13 points. Georgia Southern finished 10 of 23 (43.5 percent) from beyond the arc and shot 50 percent overall from the floor.
Adama Adams led South Carolina State (2-7) with 21 points, the only Bulldog to score in double figures.
SCST trailed by just two after an Adams layup with 6:10 left in the first half. But Southern went on a 10-0 run, including 3-pointers by Hewitt and Diamond, to break things open en route to a 12-point halftime lead.
The closest the Bulldogs got in the second half was 11.
Georgia Southern outscored SCST 29-8 on points off turnovers.
