DURHAM, N.C. -- Brandon Goode had a career-high 22 points on Tuesday night as Norfolk State edged UNC Asheville 80-78 in the East consolation game of the NIT Season Tip-Off.
Goode scored 12 of Norfolk State's final 13 points to help the Spartans hold off Asheville's comeback attempt. The Bulldogs twice cut the lead to one point in the final minute.
Norfolk State (3-2) led 79-78 when LaTre'e Russell missed the front end of a 1-and-1 for the Spartans with 12 seconds to go. Russell rebounded his own miss and went to the line again, making the first and missing the second.
Jaleel Roberts rebounded Russell's miss but Asheville (1-4) struggled to get a shot and called timeout with only 0.7 seconds left. The Bulldogs had two unsuccessful inbound attempts and the Spartans held on.
Sam Hughes tied his career-high with 16 points to lead five Asheville players in double figures.
