NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. -- Malcolm Hawkins scored 16 points, nine coming at the free throw line, as Norfolk State got by Fairleigh Dickinson 70-62 in the consolation round of the NIT Season Tip-Off on Monday.
After trailing by double digits for most of the game, Mustafaa Jones made three free throws with 1:30 remaining to pull Fairleigh Dickinson closer at 65-58. Norfolk State's Marese Phelps made a bucket on the next possession and the Spartans made enough free throws in the final minute (3 of 6).
Sidney Sanders Jr. scored a game-high 19 for Fairleigh Dickinson (1-6). The Knights made just 4 of 21 from 3-point range and 35.6 percent overall. Mathias Seilund had 11 points and eight rebounds.
Fairleigh Dickinson trailed 39-22 at halftime.
