Texas Tech quarterback Seth Doege went from goat to hero in the span of a week, something that's not lost on the 18th-ranked Red Raiders as they prepare for Saturday's road matchup with in-state rival TCU.

Doege threw three interceptions in a 41-20 home loss to then-No. 17 Oklahoma on Oct. 6 as Texas Tech (5-1, 2-1 Big 12) suffered its only defeat of the season.

It was a much different story last Saturday, though, when Doege finished 32 of 42 for a career-best 499 yards and six touchdowns at the Red Raiders routed then-No. 5 West Virgina 49-14.

"When you don't have a pass rush it's a lot easier to make your reads," Doege said.

While the upset helped Texas Tech rebound from the previous week's defeat, Doege knows a letdown Saturday quickly will change the mood again.

"We've got to remind the guys that last week we were (some) of the most hated people in Lubbock," the senior signal-caller said. "People didn't want to talk to us. Nobody wanted to shake our hand. This week, everybody wants to pat us on the back. We have to remember that.

"No matter if we lose this next one, nobody's going to remember the one before. So we've got to prepare and realize that this game is bigger than the last one."

That seems especially true as Texas Tech and TCU are playing their first game as conference rivals since the Southwest Conference fell apart after the 1995 season.

This is Horned Frogs' first year in the Big 12.

"There are not a lot of people in Lubbock that care too much about TCU people, and there are not many TCU people that care too much about Tech people," Doege said. "So I think it's going to be a fun rivalry."

The Horned Frogs (5-1, 2-1), ranked 23rd in the initial BCS standings, are still adjusting to life without quarterback Casey Pachall, who has withdrawn from school after his arrest for drinking and driving. His replacement, Trevone Boykin, finished 22 of 30 for 261 yards and four touchdowns in last Saturday's 49-21 win over Baylor.

A full week of practice made a big difference for the redshirt freshman, who was intercepted three times in TCU's 37-23 loss to Iowa State on Oct. 6 in his first collegiate start.

"He got a chance to practice for four days (last) week, not one," coach Gary Patterson said. "For us, that's what we do. We run, we play option, we get in it and do some things. The biggest thing is we didn't turn the ball over. The difference in the game is six turnovers to zero. That's a big deal.

"We had some takeaways and that's what you have to do in a conference that throws the ball all over the place. Now we'll get ready for Texas Tech."

Doege and the Red Raiders certainly will be airing it out -- they rank fourth in FBS averaging 369.0 passing yards -- but TCU's defense forced Baylor's top-ranked passing game into four interceptions.

"I am proud of the whole secondary because they communicated," Patterson said. "We had some pretty exclusive coverages that we wanted to do that we changed up to get ready for this ball game, and they were able to execute them."

Texas Tech, meanwhile, will be looking to build off its victory over a highly ranked opponent, which is something it hasn't accomplished recently. The last four times the Red Raiders have beaten a ranked team they've lost the following contest, including a defeat to Iowa State after upsetting No. 3 Oklahoma that triggered a five-game skid to end 2011.

These teams last met Sept. 16, 2006, when No. 20 TCU beat No. 24 Texas Tech 12-3.
