Spurrier posts first winning streak as Gamecocks coach

COLUMBIA, South Carolina (SportsTicker) -- Blake Mitchell and Sidney Rice earned Steve Spurrier his first winning streak at South Carolina.

Mitchell tossed a three-yard touchdown to Sidney Rice with 1:41 remaining to lift the Gamecocks to a 35-28 Southeastern Conference victory over slumping Vanderbilt.

South Carolina (4-3, 2-3 SEC East) had dropped its first three conference games under Spurrier before posting a 44-16 triumph over Kentucky here last week.

The Gamecocks held a 28-14 advantage after a 10-yard touchdown run by Syvelle Newton with 11:01 remaining, but the Commodores (4-4, 2-3 East) countered 44 seconds later when Jay Cutler threw a 41-yard TD to Earl Bennett and then tied the game on Cassen Garrison's six-yard run with 3:55 to play.

But South Carolina took the lead one final time on Mitchell's second TD pass of the game, and Cutler threw four straight incomplete passes after guiding Vanderbilt to the Gamecocks' 30.

Mitchell completed 15-of-27 passes for 221 yards with one interception, and Newton went 3-of-4 for 46 yards and two TDs and ran 15 times for 80 yards and a score.

Cutler was 27-of-49 for 339 yards, one TD and one interception.
