BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) -- Ta'Mar Scott rushed for two touchdowns and Alabama A&M's defense gave up just 122 yards in total offense as the Bulldogs rallied for a 22-13 victory over Arkansas Pine-Bluff in the Southwestern Athletic Conference championship game on Saturday.
The victory was the first in four tries for Alabama A&M (9-3) in the SWAC title game and the loss snapped a seven-game winning streak by Arkansas-Pine Bluff (8-4).
The Bulldogs entered the game as the SWAC's top defense, allowing 19.5 points per game. UAPB countered with the league's highest-scoring offense, but Alabama A&M dominated Saturday as the Golden Lions managed just 15 yards rushing and committed three turnovers.
"They did a great job," Alabama A&M coach Anthony Jones said of his team's defense. "They took the No. 1 offense in the conference in a lot of categories and basically shut them down. In the first half, except for one play (a 44-yard touchdown pass), their offense really didn't exist. We put tremendous pressure on them. We never gave them an opportunity to get in rhythm."
A fumble recovery by A&M linebacker Avery Moland led to the first score of the game, a 28-yard field goal by Jeremy Licea with 1:54 left in the first quarter. The Bulldogs took over in the second quarter when as Arkansas-Pine Bluff held the ball for only 3 minutes and ran just seven offensive plays.
But one of those plays was a 44-yard touchdown pass from Johnathan Moore to Jason Jones, a score that gave the Golden Lions a 7-3 lead. Trailing 7-6 at halftime, the Bulldogs battled back with touchdown runs by Scott of 14 yards in the third quarter and 5 yards in the fourth.
Scott finished with 58 yards rushing, and teammate Nic Luke added a game-high 74 yards on 15 carries.
The Golden Lions had just 74 yards in total offense before a late 48-yard touchdown drive allowed them to top the 100-yard mark and make the final score 22-13.
Chris Wallace, who replaced Moore at quarterback in the second half, capped the drive with a 9-yard pass to Jones. Alabama A&M quarterback Kelcy Luke completed 16-of-23 passes for 125 yards before leaving in the third quarter with an injury.
