BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- MiQuale Lewis ran for 166 yards and four touchdowns, helping Ball State overcame the loss of receiver Dante Love to beat Indiana 42-20 on Saturday night.

It was the first time the Cardinals (4-0) beat a BCS-conference school. The victory also ended Indiana's 20-game winning streak against Mid-American Conference foes, which dated to a Sept. 24, 1977 loss against Miami of Ohio when Lee Corso was coaching the Hoosiers.

But the celebration was tempered by concern over Love, who entered Saturday leading the nation at 144.3 yards per game. He was hurt after making a 2-yard catch with 10:45 left in the first half when Indiana's Chris Adkins jarred the ball loose with a big hit that led to an Indiana touchdown.

Love, a senior, stayed on the ground for several minutes before doctors rolled him onto a backboard and carted him off the field with his parents running behind the golf cart. School officials later issued a statement saying Love felt numbness and tingling while on the field. He was taken to Bloomington Hospital before being transferred to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis for further evaluation.

A hospital administrator said after the game that Love was still being evaluated in the emergency room and coach Brady Hoke abruptly cut off questions so he could get to the hospital.

The Cardinals didn't change much without Love.

They piled up 463 yards in offense, scored 28 points in the first half -- two on short TD runs by Lewis -- and put the game away with two more short TD runs from Lewis in the fourth quarter.

Indiana was led by Kellen Lewis, who ran for 148 yards and one TD and threw for 159 yards but was picked off twice.

Ball State's Nate Davis was 16-of-25 for 239 yards and threw one TD pass.

The first half resembled a track meet, with the teams combining for nearly 500 total yards and two defensive touchdowns as Ball State built a 28-20 lead.

But the Hoosiers couldn't keep pace and were shut out in the second half.
