NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Telvin Hooks ran for two touchdowns to help Tennessee State pull away from Arkansas-Pine Bluff 40-13 Saturday night.
With Tennessee State (5-0) trailing in the second quarter, Hooks, who finished with 108 yards on 14 carries, took over. He ran it in from 15 yards out to cut the Tennessee State deficit to 10-6.
Then, in the third quarter with his team trailing 13-12, Hooks had a 2-yard run with 7:05 left in the frame to put the Tigers on top 19-13. They never trailed again. Trabis Ward's 1-yard run made the score 26-13 at the end of the third quarter. Ward carried the ball 21 times for 87 yards.
The Tigers' defense finished strong, allowing three points the final three quarters, sacking the quarterback three times and forcing three turnovers.
Tennessee defensive tackle Shy Tuttle will miss the rest of the season with a broken fibula and torn ankle ligament.
Former NFL safety Tyler Sash died from an accidental overdose after mixing two powerful pain medications, and a history of injuries was a contributing factor, a medical examiner said.
