NEW YORK -- Julian Hayes rushed for 128 yards and one touchdown to lead Monmouth past Columbia 37-14 Saturday.
Marcorus Garrett's 41-yard touchdown run with 8:27 left in the first quarter gave Columbia a 7-3 lead, but Thaddeus Richards scored on a 6-yard run in the waning seconds of the opening frame to give Monmouth (2-3) the lead for good.
Hays carried the ball 32 times and helped control the clock for the Hawks, who more than doubled Columbia in time of possession.
Kwabena Asante added 97 yards rushing and a touchdown for Monmouth.
Garrett rushed for 149 yards and 2 touchdowns on just 15 carries for the Lions (0-2), who failed to convert a third down opportunity on 12 tries.
