Fales throws San Jose State past Hawaii, 37-27

Associated Press

HONOLULU -- David Fales threw three touchdown passes and Austin Lopez kicked three field goals and San Jose State beat Hawaii, 37-27, at Aloha Stadium Saturday.

The Spartans (2-3, 1-1 Mountain West) rallied from a 14-3 first-quarter deficit with 31 straight points to snap a three-game losing streak.

Fales tossed touchdown passes of 61, 35 and 27 yards and completed 16 of 35 passes for 318 yards. Lopez converted on field goals of 44, 51 -- a career-long -- and 37 yards.

San Jose State posted 550 yards of total offense, including 232 rushing yards -- both season-highs. Tim Crawley led the way with 21 rushes for 93 yards and Jarrod Lawson added 12 carries for 89 yards. Tyler Winston caught six passes for 159 yards.

Hawaii took a 14-3 lead with 3:18 left in the first quarter on an 8-yard touchdown pass from Sean Schroeder to Vasquez Haynes. However, Fales threw a 61-yard touchdown pass to Chandler Jones, followed by a 35-yard scoring strike to Billy Freeman to pull ahead 17-14 early in the second quarter.

Lopez drilled a career-long 51-yard field goal and Lawson scored before the half on a 39-yard run to give San Jose State held a 27-14 lead at intermission.

Fales found Winston for a 27-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter to extend the Spartans' lead to 34-14.

Schroeder threw second-half touchdown passes of 28 yards to Billy Ray Stutzmann and 50 yards to Chris Gant, sandwiched around a 37-yard Lopez field goal.

Schroeder finished with 342 yards on 28-of-50 passing with three touchdowns, but was intercepted three times. Haynes caught six passes for 128 yards and a score to lead the Rainbow Warriors (0-5, 0-3 Mountain West).

San Jose State took a 3-0 lead just minutes into the game on Lopez' 44-yard field goal. It was the first time since a season-opening win -- three losses ago -- that the Spartans held a lead in a game.

It was the 36th meeting all-time between the teams since the series began in 1936. San Jose State has won 18 times, including 12 of 23 games in Honolulu. It marked the first time the teams faced off as members of the Mountain West. Both were previous members of the Western Athletic Conference.
