High-tech dummies are the real MVPs

Engineer students at Dartmouth College created the MVP, also known as the "Mobile Virtual Player," to reduce head and neck injuries to players during practice.

Ross Dzuris: Mustache of the Year?

The Nebraska junior walk-on's official media guide photo includes a bow tie and a fantastic mustache.

The Florida State DE, once the top-ranked high school recruit in the nation, is scheduled to play against Texas State less than a year after major reconstructive knee surgery.

Alabama coach Nick Saban said the plan is to get two quarterbacks ready for Wisconsin and have a third on standby. The three in the mix are Jake Coker, Alec Morris and Cooper Bateman. "I've been pleased with the way all three guys have played this week," Saban said.

Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly named five captains Thursday for the 2015 season: OL Nick Martin, DL Sheldon Day, LB Joe Schmidt, LB Jaylon Smith and DB Matthias Farley. Kelly said he could've named 10 players as captain this year.

Ivey sidelined indefinitely with leg injury

Martez Ivey is Florida coach Jim McElwain's first prized recruit, but he may not see the field for a while after he was sidelined with a leg injury that will require surgery. Details

Looking for a breakout candidate in the SEC? Look no further than Auburn WR Ricardo Louis. Known for his part in the "Prayer at Jordan-Hare," Louis wants to be remembered for more than just that play. "People call me a legend because of that play, but I want to become a legit legend for doing great things consistently, outside of just that play."

Another name to consider for Ohio State as it moves on from Noah Brown's injury at WR: Torrance Gibson. The converted QB has been limited at times by a foot injury, but Urban Meyer name-dropped Devin Smith when talking about Gibson's ability earlier in training camp. The versatile freshman has crazy athleticism and could stretch the field like Brown was expected to this fall.

Wisconsin poised for success with Chryst

ESPN's Tom Luginbill: "You're coming into an offense that has essentially been born of you and you know the ins and outs and the dynamics of the program."

If you're looking for some movement in Alabama's QB race, you're out of luck. Watching today's practice, the top three in the rotation is the same as it's been for a while with Jake Coker, Alec Morris and Cooper Bateman leading the pack, trailed by David Cornwell and Blake Barnett. That said, you have to think the coaching staff narrows the field to two by the start of next week in preparation for Wisconsin.

Practice is a late scratch from the schedule today at Nebraska. Nine days before the opener against BYU, looks like Mike Riley is intent to get the Huskers healthy and fresh.

No one said the trip to see the wizard would be easy. Florida State's yellow brick road, a motivational ploy by coach Jimbo Fisher, is getting a little chewed up outside the Seminoles' practice facility. The sixth-year coach has played coy when asked the meaning of the road and what the Seminoles must do to reach the wizard, who remains unidentified.

Harbaugh starstruck by MJ's call

Need evidence that Michael Jordan still carries weight in today's sports world? Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh was in shock when he got a call from Jordan in July. 'The real Michael Jordan?'

I'm all for fining college players, as long as they get to fine their coaches for knucklehead decisions, changing jobs, having 1 too many...

Stanford, with its grind-it-out style, is a team that typically plays many close games, so field goals are particularly important to the Cardinal. Conrad Ukropina will likely be Jordan Williamson's successor in the placekicker role, according to my chat with special teams coordinator Pete Alamar. Versatile freshman Jake Bailey is the favorite to win punting and kickoff duties, but Stanford will go with a veteran at a position that may ultimately decide more than a few contests:

Northwestern puts an end to its 3-way QB race by announcing that redshirt freshman Clayton Thorson will start Week 1 vs. Stanford. He was ranked as the seventh-best QB in the 2014 class.

Adam Rittenberg ESPN Staff Writer

Northwestern announces redshirt freshman Clayton Thorson will start opener against Stanford. Think it's a smart choice by Pat Fitzgerald to go with the younger guy. Has the most upside of size, speed, arm strength. Fitzgerald often leans toward veterans but decided future is now with Thorson.

There might be some logistical headaches this season as the NCAA adds independent medical observers with the ability to stop games if they witness unaddressed head injuries. Tommy Stich, who held the job last season in Florida's pilot program, said it will be worth the trouble.

Some interesting developments on Oklahoma State's depth chart including a pair of true freshmen, HB Jeff Carr and WR Jalen McCleskey, as No 1 punt and kick returners. Both freshmen have gotten plenty of preseason praise and could factor in on offense as well.

Pitt receiver Tyler Boyd is a preseason All-American but will sit out the opener against Youngstown State next week after an offseason DUI. Said Boyd, "I have to control everything that I'm doing and make all great decisions. I owned up to everything. I can assure and promise it probably won't happen again."

Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh says he will name a starting quarterback in Monday for his team's first game. Harbaugh says Utah will send its depth chart Monday, so he plans to reciprocate in the spirit of fair, honest competition.
