Jones scores 28 to lead Cougers

SANTA BARBARA, California (Ticker) -- Chandi Jones scored 28 points to lead third-seeded Houston to a 62-47 victory over No. 14 Wisconsin-Green Bay in the opening round of the East Region.

The Lady Cougars (28-3), who have won a school-record 13 straight games, erased a two-point halftime deficit by holding the Phoenix to just 20 points in the second half, earning their first NCAA Tournament win.

Jones, the third-leading scorer in the nation with a 22.5 average this season, nailed 4-of-8 attempts from 3-point range. The 5-10 senior and Sancho Lyttle combined to score all the points for Houston during a 14-7 run that left the Lady Cougars on top, 55-43, with 3:37 remaining.

Nicole Oliver chipped in 11 points and Lyttle pulled down 10 rebounds for the Houston, which will meet the winner of the UC-Santa Barbara-Colorado game on Monday.

Nicole Soulis scored 13 points and Amy Fieck had a game-high 11 rebounds for Wisconsin-Green Bay (23-8), which hit just 7-of-29 shots (24 percent) from the floor in the second half and shot 29 percent overall.
