GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) -- Packers coach Mike McCarthy had been so incensed with his players' poor performance last week he considered making his starters play a full four quarters in an otherwise inconsequential regular-season finale.
McCarthy cooled off by Sunday, deciding to rest several top players for the playoffs. It turned out he didn't really have to choose between playing it safe and playing to win in Green Bay's 34-13 victory over Detroit.![]() | ||

Game notes
McCarthy said he didn't have any additional information on injuries to two of the team's guards. Jason Spitz left with a quadriceps injury in the first half and Junius Coston injured his calf in the second half. ... Packers rookie kicker Mason Crosby finished the season leading the NFL with 141 points, the highest-scoring season by a kicker in franchise history and third-highest season point total by any Packers player.

Scouts Buzz
The Packers got back on track heading into the postseason, thanks to an impressive early showing by their starters. QB Brett Favre got good protection and exploited the Lions’ zone coverage. And after featured back Ryan Grant was banged up early in the contest, backup Brandon Jackson came on and showed excellent inline vision between the tackles. The Packers’ defense pinned its ears back and forced Detroit signal-caller Jon Kitna into two interceptions. The Packers were able to get a victory, feel good about their frontline players and still give themselves some rest as they took advantage of an average effort from the visitors.
