Sean Payton said Drew Brees compartmentalizes "extremely well," so he's not worried about his lingering contract talks being a distraction. "He's someone that's extremely focused. He's been sharp here these three days," Payton said. "I would say it's been a strength of his just with regards to playing, the ability to focus whatever situation we're in. And certainly this is no different."

Wide receiver Jeremy Maclin left Chiefs practice early with an apparent injury, though the situation didn't look serious. Maclin was slow to get off the ground after making a catch during a 7 on 7 passing drill. He walked on his own to the sideline, where he received no medical attention but did consult with trainer Rick Burkholder. Maclin soon left for the locker room unaccompanied by medical personnel.

On a positive injury note, Saints coach Sean Payton said RB C.J. Spiller's "health and movement skills look noticeably different" after his 2015 season was hampered by a summer knee injury. "He worked his butt off in the offseason to get that strength back in that ... knee," Payton said. "That's been real encouraging."

Two interesting alignment notes from Saints practice Thursday: LBs Stephone Anthony, James Laurinaitis took turns working with the 1s in nickel packages (only two LBs on the field). And second-year pro Kaleb Eulls has moved from DT to offensive guard -- a move that Sean Payton said they planned even before the draft.

Saints' Andrus Peat worked with the starters at RG during Thursday's OTA. Sean Payton said he'll take snaps at both RG and RT. Payton envisions Peat as a starter, with the specific position to be determined.

Saints just wrapped the first OTA practice that was open to the media. S Jairus Byrd, WR Brandin Cooks did not practice, instead working off to the side with trainers. Sean Payton declined to get into many injury specifics but said Byrd is rehabbing the same knee that bothered him the last two years and is on schedule to be back before training camp. ... Unfortunate for Byrd, who seemed on track for his first fully healthy offseason in New Orleans, but still ample time to get back to 100 percent.
